Volunteers one day a week at the MOCEANS office in Long Branch. She also mentors a 9th grade high school student at Asbury Park High School.
Past professional experience includes 18 years as an RN specializing in rehab and home care as well as being a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of NJ for nearly as many years.
A serious fall in 1998 causing some permanent damage and several years later she found what it was like to be on the other side of the desk. She grew up around disabilities because her mom worked at a small Polio And Rehab Hospital. She also served as a Candy Stripper while in high school.
Jennifer Sterner, Board Member
Has been an active consumer of Moceans CIL for over twelve years. As a consumer she participated in the following areas: as a member, a volunteer, a PASP consumer since 1995, a Parent Advocate, Board Treasurer, and now as a Board Member.
She understands that knowing the heart of an organization is very important to how it will continue to grow and maintain its standing in the community. After so many years of being a part of Moceans CIL, she knows it's heart (and many of it's people) and wanted to give back to the organization as much as it has given to her.
Gail Hoppenstedt, Board Member
After retiring as an elementary school teacher, I began my volunteer work at the Ocean County Office for the Disabled, in 1986. I became a speaker for the Disability Awareness Through Education (DATE) for 6 years, and initiated the project in Monmouth County through Moceans in 1992. Speakers traveled to schools , businesses and organizations in both counties, and presentation were seen by thousands of children and adults. The positive theme of the program keeps it popular in both counties today.
I also served on the boards of the Ocean County Transportation Advisory board, the Ocean and Monmouth chapters of the NJ Coalition on Women with Disabilities, the Consumer Action Committee on Disabilities (CACOD), and the PASP Advisory board.
I reside in Eatontown with my husband Richard, who has ironically developed a neuromuscular disease, needing 24 hour care. He was my primary caregiver in the past, making management of my own spinal cord disease easier. We are now surrounded by an “army of angels” as I call all the aides who help us. There is never a dull moment in this house!
I am looking forward to being able to increase my volunteer activities to help Moceans move forward.
