Community-based Youth Training/Self-Help Program

TRANSITIONING

From high school to adult life is an important stage for all youth. Decisions made, at this time, will affect the course of young people's lives. It is, therefore, of prime importance that youth expereince emotional, behavioral health challenges and related psychosocial stressors have the supports the need during this pivitol time in thier development. Appropriate transitional services can help these youth to face challenges that may lead to poverty due to chronic unemployment and in many instances under employment.

An understanding of one's disability or challenges, of one's rights, and of one's personal and community responsibilities coupled with effective decision-making and self-advocacy skills will leave him/her in a better position to access needed services.

Our Community Based Youth Training/Self-Help Programs has been developed to empower youth with activities of daily living through community-centered planning.

PARTICIPANTS MUST BE:

  • Between the ages of 17 and 21
  • Willing to take the Life Skills Assessment Test
  • Willing to develop an Independent Living Plan (ILP)
  • Willing to work towards goals outlined in the ILP
  • A high school junior or senior
  • A high school graduate, or have a GED certificate or working toward GED completion
  • Able to meet with Life Skills Instructor at least twice a month
  • Willing to participate in monthly Peer Support Group

The Life Skills Assessment Test covers nine areas that are very important aspects of activities of daily living in which one area is no more important than another area.

LIFE SKILLS AREAS:

  •  Career Planning - plan for a career
  • Communication - getting along with others
  • Daily Living - learning about nutrition, menu planning, food shopping, dining etiquette, kitchen clean-up, home safety
  • Home Life/Community Living - being a responsible citizen, being successful in one's community, accessing community resources
  • Housing and Money Management - how to obtain housing, how to open and manage a bank account, and how to manage personal credit
  • Self-Care - promote health and physical development
  • Social Relationships - skills of personal development, cultural awareness
